Service Description
Esgrima de Machete is a martial and cultural art practiced amongst Afro Colombian communities in the Cauca Valley on the Pacific coast of Colombia. It's inception began before the War for Independence from Spain. It continues to thrive until this day. This practice uses rhythm, timing, distance to out skill an opponent. It increases mental acuity, flexibility and dexterity. Participants will learn the foundational exercises and sequences to utilize and move with armaments (sticks) in class. They will also learn some of the history of the art. Arthur "Sonny" Batata apprenticed under Maestro Miguel Velez Lourido and Gran Maestro Hector Elias Sandoval in Puerto Tejada, Colombia. He was appointed Culture Bearer and has been teaching in the Los Angeles area since 2018. Beginning January 25th, every Saturday 10:30am-12:00pm.
